Caribou, ME – Travelers across Maine are urged to take caution as dense fog blankets major roadways, including I-95, through Tuesday morning. The National Weather Service has issued a Dense Fog Advisory for areas spanning the Greater Bangor region into the Central Highlands and Downeast Maine.
According to the NWS Caribou office, visibility is expected to drop to a quarter-mile or less in affected areas, creating hazardous driving conditions. Warm, moist air mixing with cold surfaces and existing snowpack is causing widespread fog, particularly during overnight hours. Drivers are advised to use low-beam headlights, reduce speed, and allow extra distance between vehicles.
Looking ahead, rain showers are expected to persist throughout Monday, with highs near 48°F. Overnight into New Year’s Eve, patchy fog will linger as temperatures drop to 35°F. By Tuesday, expect mostly cloudy skies with highs reaching 41°F.
The real weather challenge arrives on New Year’s Day, with a storm system bringing a mix of rain and snow. Early forecasts predict precipitation beginning Wednesday night, with temperatures hovering near freezing and winds gusting up to 20 mph. By Thursday, heavy snow accumulation could impact travel across Maine, especially in northern regions.
Residents planning New Year’s celebrations or travel should monitor local forecasts closely and prepare for rapidly changing conditions.
