Buffalo, NY – Western New York is bracing for powerful winds and flood risks today, with conditions expected to impact travel and infrastructure. A High Wind Warning remains in effect until 4 p.m., while a Lakeshore Flood Warning continues until 1 p.m.
According to the National Weather Service, southwest winds of 25 to 35 mph, with gusts reaching up to 60 mph, will affect Niagara, Orleans, and Genesee counties. These strong gusts could down trees and power lines, potentially causing outages. Residents are advised to avoid wooded areas and use caution when driving, especially on Route 5, where flooding is anticipated along the Lake Erie shoreline.
Flood risks are also heightened for Erie and Chautauqua counties due to rapidly rising water levels at the eastern end of Lake Erie. Significant erosion and debris are likely along beaches, breakwaters, and piers, with dangerous wave activity expected to make boating and swimming hazardous.
As the day progresses, rain is expected to intensify, transitioning to snow late Tuesday night. Tuesday will bring temperatures nearing 45°F with steady rain, followed by colder conditions on New Year’s Day. Snow showers are predicted for Wednesday, with highs dipping to 28°F and breezy winds persisting.
Prepare now by securing outdoor items, charging electronics, and staying updated through local weather alerts. Those near flood-prone areas should avoid shorelines and monitor water levels closely.
Be sure to check forecasts regularly for updates as conditions evolve heading into the New Year.
