Chicago, IL – A powerful Arctic outbreak will bring dangerously cold temperatures and heavy snow to the Central and Eastern United States. The cold front, expected from January 7 through January 13, could plunge temperatures well below freezing across multiple regions.
According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), this weather pattern could reach as far south as the Gulf Coast and northern Florida. The outbreak includes the coldest air of the season so far, with high winds and extreme wind chills threatening public safety.
Frozen precipitation will stretch across the Southern Plains and Appalachian areas, extending into the Midwest, Great Lakes, and Northeast. This could cause hazardous road conditions and widespread travel disruptions. NOAA warns of enhanced lake-effect snow near the Great Lakes, as Arctic air flows over open water.
Agricultural impacts are likely, with subfreezing conditions threatening sensitive crops in southern states. The Mid-Atlantic and Southeast could also face icy conditions, which could disrupt power lines and increase risks for outdoor workers.
Residents should prepare for extreme cold and icy roads by stocking supplies and monitoring updates. NOAA advises travelers to check forecasts before leaving and to carry emergency supplies. Officials urge communities to look out for vulnerable neighbors, pets, and livestock.
