177 Guns Converted into Assault Pistols: Oklahoma Man Pleads Guilty in Florida Case

WPBN: An individual named Christopher John Murchison, who resides in Oklahoma, has entered a guilty plea to two counts of making false statements on official records in his capacity as a licensed guns dealer.

His acts were a component of a sophisticated and illegal weapons trafficking program that was carried out in the state of Florida.

This scheme encompassed the unlawful modification and sale of 177 firearms. According to the information that was provided by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF), these firearms were categorized as assault rifle-style pistols for the purpose of resale.

Because to his participation in the scam, Murchison, who is 52 years old, is now facing the possibility of receiving a maximum sentence of ten years in federal prison. It is important to note that the court has not yet decided on a particular date for the sentencing of the defendant.

During the course of the investigation conducted by the ATF, it was discovered that Murchison collaborated with Michael Sawyer and Randolph Swindle in order to enable the trafficking of weapons.

The method consisted of Sawyer making online purchases of firearms and then arranging for their delivery to Swindle, who is a federally licensed firearms dealer situated in Bunnell, Florida.

The process was meticulously thought out. Sawyer would then proceed to prefill ATF Form 4473s, which is an essential document that is necessary for transactions involving weapons, with fabricated information once he had received the firearms.

In order to conceal the true nature of the transactions, he used his own name on these documents, in addition to the identities of his mother and a friend.

After then, Sawyer gave these forged documents to Murchison, who utilized them in order to obtain the firearms from Swindle. After obtaining hold of the firearms, Murchison altered them so that they resembled assault rifles and were used as pistols.

These modified firearms were then sent back to Sawyer with the purpose of being sold illegally, which effectively circumvented the limits imposed by the federal government and allowed the firearms to be sold on the black market.

The illicit enterprise, which lasted from July 2021 to February 2022, was responsible for the acquisition, modification, and trafficking of roughly 177 weapons. This was accomplished through the utilization of illegal means.

Since then, a significant number of these firearms have been retrieved and have been connected to criminal activity not only in the United States but also in other countries, such as Puerto Rico and Colombia.

Due to the fact that illegally trafficked firearms frequently make their way into criminal networks and are utilized in violent crimes, our findings highlight the deadly and far-reaching ramifications of the plan.

Murchison is not the only person who has been detained and charged for their roles in the plan; Swindle and Sawyer have also been taken into custody. Every single one of them has entered a guilty plea to the charge of making false statements on documents.

When it comes to the criminal actions that they participated in, Swindle and Sawyer each face the possibility of receiving a maximum prison sentence of five years.

Federal officials have underscored the gravity of the situation, drawing attention to the fact that concerted measures are necessary in order to dismantle an operation of such technological sophistication.

It is important to remember that the investigation serves as a warning of the serious repercussions that are associated with violations of firearms legislation and the vital need of strictly adhering to it.

The sentencing of Murchison, Swindle, and Sawyer will become a significant step in the process of holding accountable those individuals who put the safety of the general public in jeopardy through the illicit trafficking of weapons.
