Sioux Falls, SD – A wintry mix of freezing rain, light snow, and patchy fog is forecast to hit the Sioux Falls area Monday morning, potentially causing hazardous travel conditions along I-90. The National Weather Service advises caution as rain transitions to snow by the afternoon.
According to the National Weather Service, precipitation is expected to begin as light rain or freezing rain early Monday before turning to snow in the afternoon. Ice accumulations will likely make roads slippery, especially during the morning and evening commutes. Drivers are urged to allow extra time for travel and to use extreme caution on bridges and overpasses, which could freeze quickly.
Monday’s high will reach 38°F before temperatures dip to 22°F overnight. Winds from the northwest will increase to 15 mph, creating additional visibility issues in blowing snow. New snow accumulation is expected to be less than half an inch, but ice could pose a greater risk to safety.
Looking ahead, the cold snap will persist through New Year’s Day, with highs near 24°F and lows in the teens. Tuesday and Wednesday will remain mostly cloudy, but conditions are expected to improve with no significant precipitation forecast after Monday.
Residents should monitor updates from the National Weather Service and avoid unnecessary travel during peak icy conditions. Prepare now by checking vehicle emergency kits and ensuring adequate tire tread.
