Pendleton, OR – A powerful winter storm continues to impact the East Slopes of the Oregon Cascades, where heavy snow and high winds are expected to persist through Monday morning. The National Weather Service warns of significant accumulations and hazardous travel conditions.
According to the National Weather Service, areas above 3,500 feet may receive between 10 and 18 inches of snow by Monday at 4 a.m. Wind gusts could reach up to 40 mph, creating whiteout conditions with blowing and drifting snow. Residents and travelers in Camp Sherman, La Pine, Sisters, and Sunriver are urged to avoid unnecessary travel.
Travelers on U.S. Highway 20 and other mountain passes should be prepared for difficult conditions, including possible road closures. If travel is unavoidable, authorities recommend carrying a winter storm kit with essentials like tire chains, a flashlight, and blankets.
For those in Washington’s Cascades, similar conditions are anticipated above 3,500 feet, with accumulations of 7 to 15 inches expected. The Northern Blue Mountains, including Meacham and Tollgate, could see up to 16 inches of snow above 4,000 feet, continuing through late Monday morning.
This winter storm coincides with holiday travel plans, making early preparation crucial. Officials advise checking road conditions on state websites before departing. Residents are also reminded to avoid downed power lines and report outages to their utility providers.
As the week progresses, weather conditions are expected to ease slightly, with mostly sunny skies forecasted by Tuesday. However, rain could return for New Year’s Day, so keep an eye on local updates.
