West Slopes, WA – Travelers heading through Washington’s Cascade passes face dangerous conditions as a winter storm intensifies. Heavy snowfall of 6 to 18 inches is expected at elevations above 3,000 feet starting Sunday at 1 a.m., with impacts lasting through early Monday.
According to the National Weather Service, snow accumulation and wind gusts up to 35 mph will create hazardous driving conditions, particularly on bridges and overpasses. The affected areas include Morton, Ashford, and the Crystal Mountain Ski Area. Travelers are urged to avoid nonessential trips and equip their vehicles with emergency supplies, including food, water, and flashlights.
Snow-packed roads could lead to delays and closures on major routes, including U.S. Highway 12 and State Route 410. Power outages are also possible in remote areas, with repair efforts potentially delayed due to weather conditions.
The storm coincides with the busy New Year’s Eve travel period, leaving holiday plans vulnerable to disruption. Residents and visitors in the region should consider postponing travel until conditions improve after Monday morning.
Looking ahead, weather models predict a break in snowfall by late Monday, followed by frigid temperatures through New Year’s Day. Additional snow showers are possible midweek, making preparations for long-term winter conditions essential.
Drivers should monitor updates from the Washington State Department of Transportation and stay informed on changing conditions. If travel is unavoidable, ensure your vehicle is prepared for emergencies, including tire chains and winter gear.
