Charleston, WV – Strong winds and the potential for severe thunderstorms are expected in Charleston and surrounding areas Sunday, as a cold front sweeps through the region. Wind gusts up to 45 mph could cause tree damage and sporadic power outages. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a wind advisory, effective through this evening.
According to the NWS, showers and thunderstorms are likely before 2 p.m., with damaging wind gusts being the primary threat. Rainfall between a quarter and half an inch is possible. South winds of 13 to 17 mph, with occasional gusts reaching 38 mph, will persist throughout the day. Residents are advised to secure outdoor items and remain prepared for potential power outages.
Tonight, conditions will ease slightly, with a 50% chance of showers mainly between 7 p.m. and 1 a.m. Winds are expected to reduce to 9 to 16 mph, with gusts as high as 31 mph.
Looking ahead to Monday, skies will clear, offering mostly sunny conditions and a high of 56°F. Rain returns Tuesday, bringing a 90% chance of precipitation and highs near 58°F. New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day will see colder conditions, with rain transitioning to snow by Wednesday night.
