Annandale, VA – Heavy rain and gusty winds will move through Virginia today, potentially impacting travel along major roadways like I-95. Showers are expected to begin early this afternoon and continue into the evening, with rainfall totals of up to an inch in some areas.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), the heaviest rainfall will taper off late tonight, but patchy fog is likely to develop after midnight. Winds may gust as high as 30 mph, especially near the coast, creating hazardous driving conditions. Motorists should allow extra travel time and drive cautiously.
Temperatures will peak near 64 degrees today before dropping to 48 degrees tonight. Looking ahead, Monday will bring sunny skies and calmer conditions with highs around 59 degrees. Rain returns Tuesday afternoon and could linger into New Year’s Eve, but New Year’s Day is forecast to be dry and partly sunny, with a high near 49 degrees.
There is also a low probability of severe weather this afternoon or evening, including strong thunderstorms and damaging winds. Although a brief tornado cannot be ruled out in southwestern areas, the overall risk remains very low, according to the NWS. Residents should monitor local alerts and have a plan in place in case conditions worsen.
This week’s weather will remain dynamic, with cooler temperatures settling in by Thursday. Stay tuned to local forecasts and plan your New Year’s travel accordingly.
