Southern Illinois –The National Weather Service has issued a Flash Flood Watch for parts of southern Illinois and southeast Missouri starting Saturday evening. Widespread storms are expected to bring up to three inches of rainfall, increasing the risk of flooding.
According to the NWS Paducah, the heaviest rainfall will concentrate west of earlier forecasts. Rainfall totals are expected to range from 1.5 to 3 inches, with isolated areas seeing even higher amounts. Saturated soils in the region heighten the risk of flash flooding, particularly in low-lying and poorly drained areas.
The Flash Flood Watch is in effect from 6 p.m. Saturday through 9 a.m. Sunday. Officials urge residents to avoid driving through flooded roads, as conditions can become dangerous quickly. Safety information advises people to seek alternate routes and remain cautious.
Rain is expected to taper off by Sunday morning, though some light showers may linger. The NWS recommends staying updated with weather alerts and preparing for potential disruptions.
