Columbia, SC – A tornado watch is in effect across South Carolina until 1 PM today, as severe thunderstorms threaten the region. Residents along the I-26 corridor, including Columbia, Greenville, and Charleston, face the potential for damaging winds, isolated tornadoes, and hail.
According to the National Weather Service, the primary threats include wind gusts of up to 70 mph and hail up to the size of quarters. These storms are moving eastward, creating the possibility of brief but dangerous tornadoes. Additional severe weather could develop later today as thunderstorms intensify.
Emergency officials urge residents to have multiple ways to receive weather alerts, including NOAA Weather Radios and cell phones. If warnings are issued, seek immediate shelter in a sturdy, windowless interior room.
As the tornado watch expires this afternoon, the severe weather risk will shift toward the coastal regions. The extended forecast for Monday shows drier conditions, but temperatures will remain mild, with highs in the mid-60s. By Tuesday, temperatures will climb into the upper 60s to low 70s, providing pleasant conditions for New Year’s Eve celebrations.
Rain chances will return on Wednesday, with scattered showers likely through Friday. Residents should monitor forecasts closely, as additional severe weather systems could develop later this week.
Stay weather-aware today, and be prepared to act quickly in the event of a tornado warning.
