Pittsburgh, PA – Severe weather could disrupt western Pennsylvania this week, with thunderstorms today and snow forecast for New Year’s Day. Strong winds, heavy rain, and isolated tornadoes threaten areas near I-70, creating hazardous conditions for travelers.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), a Level 1 marginal risk for severe storms remains in effect until 7 p.m. Sunday. Damaging wind gusts and a brief tornado are possible, particularly in areas near the Ohio border. Residents should monitor alerts and secure outdoor items.
Looking ahead, rain continues into Monday, but temperatures will drop Tuesday evening, transitioning precipitation to snow by Wednesday. The New Year’s Day forecast calls for widespread snowfall, with accumulation possible along roadways, particularly I-376 and I-79. Commuters should prepare for slick surfaces and delays.
The detailed forecast includes:
• Monday: Showers likely before 7 a.m., high near 50°F. Winds up to 29 mph may create gusty conditions.
• Tuesday: Rain, transitioning to snow by late evening, high near 39°F.
• New Year’s Day: Snow expected all day, with high accumulation potential. Temperatures will peak at 32°F before falling overnight.
Residents are advised to plan holiday travel carefully, avoid flooded roadways, and stay updated on evolving conditions. Snow plows are expected to be active New Year’s Eve into Wednesday.
