Albuquerque, NM – A mostly clear night with mild west breezes will bring above-average temperatures across central New Mexico. This unseasonably warm weather could set the stage for critical fire conditions early next week.
According to the National Weather Service, strong west winds and low relative humidity are expected on Monday. Wind gusts may exceed 50 mph, particularly in eastern New Mexico. Relative humidity is forecast to drop as low as 8%, creating a recipe for rapid fire spread.
The central mountain chain and adjacent highlands will see temperatures above freezing overnight, unusual for late December. Areas such as Roswell and Santa Rosa could experience lows near 38 degrees.
Officials advise residents to avoid outdoor burning and secure loose objects. Strong winds combined with dry conditions increase the risk of wildfires across grasslands and dry vegetation.
The National Weather Service urges caution, as critical fire weather could affect travel and outdoor plans. Stay updated by monitoring local forecasts and warnings.
