Hastings, NE – Rain, snow, and gusty winds will sweep across south-central Nebraska on Monday, prompting travel precautions as New Year’s approaches. Forecasters expect a rain-snow mix to develop by the evening, with areas along I-80 seeing the highest chances for accumulation.
According to the National Weather Service, Monday will start cloudy with a high near 45 degrees before rain moves in after noon. As temperatures drop, the rain will transition to snow during the evening hours, potentially leaving under an inch of accumulation in most areas. Northern regions near I-80 could see slightly higher amounts, though accumulations are still expected to remain light.
Winds will intensify throughout the day, with gusts reaching up to 50 mph in parts of south-central Nebraska. Drivers are advised to use caution, particularly during peak wind hours in the afternoon and early evening. Reduced visibility and slick road conditions may impact travel along major routes like I-80.
The weather will remain chilly on Tuesday, with highs only reaching the mid-30s under mostly sunny skies. Overnight lows could dip to 17 degrees. New Year’s Day is expected to bring calm, sunny conditions with a high near 38 degrees, providing a reprieve before colder temperatures return later in the week.
Residents are encouraged to stay informed on road conditions and prepare for possible travel delays. Be sure to secure outdoor items that could be affected by gusty winds.
