Nebraska and Iowa: Rain Shifting to Snow Monday Night Brings Travel Concerns

Omaha, NE – Rain and snow are expected across eastern Nebraska and western Iowa Monday into Tuesday, potentially creating hazardous travel conditions. Rainfall will begin Monday afternoon, with temperatures in the 40s before plummeting into the low 30s Monday night. A transition to snow is forecast as the cold front moves in, affecting communities along Interstate 80 and beyond.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), light snow accumulation of up to an inch is likely, with isolated areas seeing up to 2 inches. Warm ground temperatures will initially cause some melting, but slick roads are expected as snow persists into the evening. The highest snow chances are in northeast Nebraska, where travel may become challenging. Drivers should reduce speeds and remain vigilant during commutes, especially after dark.

Monday’s Forecast:

Morning: Cloudy with patchy fog and temperatures near 38°F.

Afternoon: Rain begins, high of 44°F.

• Evening: Rain changes to snow; low of 27°F with wind gusts up to 23 mph.

Extended Forecast:

• Tuesday: Mostly cloudy with a high of 33°F, and lingering snow showers tapering off by daybreak.

• New Year’s Day: Sunny but cold, with a high of 34°F and breezy conditions.

• Wednesday: Partly cloudy, high near 32°F, with a slight chance of snow Thursday.

Residents should plan for potential delays and check local forecasts regularly for updates. The fog advisory remains in effect until noon Sunday, with visibility under a half-mile in some areas.
