Michigan Drivers: Patchy Fog and Icy Spots Possible Today, Prepare for Lake Effect Snow on New Year’s Eve

Marquette, MI – Drivers in the Upper Peninsula should prepare for patchy fog and icy spots on roadways, including US-41, as light rain and snow are forecast to begin tonight. With temperatures hovering near freezing, the National Weather Service warns of slick conditions that could impact travel late Sunday into Monday morning.

According to the National Weather Service, light rain and snow will move into the area tonight, primarily affecting eastern Upper Michigan. Gusty winds of up to 25 mph may also reduce visibility in some areas. Highs on Monday will stay between 34 and 40 degrees, keeping conditions damp and cool.

Heading into New Year’s Eve, colder air will settle into the region. Overnight lows will dip to 22–30 degrees, increasing the likelihood of lake effect snow showers developing late Tuesday night into early Wednesday. Snowfall is expected to accumulate across northern sections of the U.P., with slick conditions likely through New Year’s Day.

Looking ahead to the first week of January, temperatures are forecast to drop below normal, with highs struggling to rise above the mid-20s. This colder pattern will usher in more widespread lake effect snow showers by midweek, creating potential hazards for drivers.

Residents are advised to monitor forecasts and exercise caution when traveling, especially during late-night and early-morning hours when roads may become icy.
