Des Moines, IA — Dense fog across central Iowa is creating hazardous driving conditions this morning, with visibility reduced to a quarter mile or less in many areas. A Dense Fog Advisory remains in effect until noon today, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).
Motorists are urged to use low-beam headlights and drive slowly to account for poor visibility. Major roadways, including I-80 and I-35, are experiencing dense fog, making morning travel particularly risky. The NWS advises drivers to leave extra space between vehicles and plan for additional travel time.
Visibility is expected to improve after noon as temperatures rise slightly. Today’s high will reach 44°F, with cloudy skies persisting throughout the day. Tonight, patchy fog could redevelop, but visibility is likely to remain better than this morning.
Looking ahead, widespread rain is forecast for Monday, particularly in the afternoon and evening, with highs near 44°F. As temperatures drop to 29°F Monday night, rain may transition into snow, creating slick conditions into early Tuesday. Tuesday’s forecast calls for mostly cloudy skies, a high of 34°F, and lows near 22°F.
By New Year’s Day, colder temperatures and clearer skies are expected, with highs around 30°F and mostly sunny conditions. Travelers and residents should prepare for fluctuating weather patterns throughout the week and monitor updates for potential hazardous conditions.
Stay alert for changing visibility and use extra caution during foggy conditions. For the latest updates, visit the National Weather Service website or tune in to local forecasts.
