Athens, AL – A tornado swept through Athens late Thursday night, delivering winds of up to 100 mph and causing significant damage.

The National Weather Service in Huntsville confirmed the storm as an EF-1 tornado in a preliminary survey. The tornado struck between 11:15 p.m. and 11:20 p.m. and traveled 3.87 miles with a maximum width of 160 yards. While property damage assessments are ongoing, there have been no injuries or fatalities reported from the event.

According to the National Weather Service, the storm system moved through Athens on December 28 and into the early hours of December 29. The tornado’s strength caused localized damage, primarily along its narrow path through the area. Residents reported powerful winds and debris scattered across properties.

Emergency services and local officials are working to clear debris and ensure public safety. Roadways impacted by debris have been largely reopened. Residents in Athens and surrounding areas are advised to remain cautious while cleanup efforts continue.

The National Weather Service encourages residents to review their tornado preparedness plans. This includes ensuring access to safe shelter during future storm warnings. The storm serves as a reminder of the importance of staying informed during severe weather events, especially in areas prone to tornado activity.

Athens is no stranger to strong storms, but the swift response of local agencies has minimized disruptions. The community’s focus now shifts to repairing the damage and preparing for future severe weather.
