Newport, NC – Showers and storms are expected to develop tonight across eastern North Carolina as a strong cold front moves through the region. Forecasters warn of wind gusts up to 60 mph and the potential for a weak tornado, particularly in coastal areas from Morehead City to Kill Devil Hills.
According to the National Weather Service, thunderstorms may occur between late afternoon Sunday and early Monday morning, with the greatest chance concentrated in white-highlighted areas on their storm map. Affected residents should secure outdoor objects and remain alert for sudden weather changes.
Marine hazards are also a concern, with gale-force winds and waves up to 11 feet expected, particularly near Ocracoke and Hatteras beaches. Beachgoers and boaters are advised to avoid the water until conditions improve Monday.
Monday brings calmer weather with sunny skies and highs near 65°F. Clear conditions are expected to continue into New Year’s Eve, with temperatures dipping to 33°F Wednesday night. Sunny skies are predicted for New Year’s Day, though cooler air will settle in later in the week, with highs around 48°F by Thursday.
