Elkhead and Park Mountains, CO – A powerful winter storm continues to bring heavy snow and dangerous winds to Colorado’s Elkhead and Park Mountains, with hazardous conditions expected to persist through New Year’s Eve.
The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning, which remains in effect until 11 a.m. Sunday. A second warning begins Sunday night at 8 p.m. and will last through 5 p.m. Monday. Snowfall totals could reach up to 16 inches by Sunday morning, with an additional 7 to 14 inches likely before the storm subsides on Monday. Wind gusts up to 55 mph are expected, creating blowing and drifting snow that will reduce visibility to less than 1/4 mile in some areas.
Travelers and residents should prepare for extremely difficult conditions. Roads, bridges, and overpasses are expected to become slick and potentially impassable due to heavy accumulation and icy surfaces. Those traveling for New Year’s celebrations are advised to delay plans or take precautions, including carrying emergency supplies such as food, water, flashlights, and warm clothing.
According to the NWS, Monday will bring widespread blowing snow with wind chills as low as -24 degrees. Drivers are urged to check road conditions via Colorado’s 511 service before heading out. Non-essential travel should be postponed to ensure safety during this significant weather event.
Looking ahead, light snow may linger into Tuesday, with colder temperatures and breezy conditions likely through the remainder of the week. Residents should monitor updates and prepare for continued winter weather impacts as the storm system gradually weakens.
