Birmingham, AL – Severe storms are expected to impact Alabama tonight, bringing tornadoes, damaging winds, and large hail. A strong line of storms is advancing eastward from Mississippi and could affect several counties by early Sunday.
The National Weather Service (NWS) warns of gusts up to 70 mph and the potential for EF-1 or stronger tornadoes. According to the NWS Birmingham office, storms will intensify between 9 p.m. Saturday and 7 a.m. Sunday. Residents in central and southern Alabama are at the highest risk, particularly those in enhanced or moderate threat areas.
Authorities urge residents to monitor alerts and have multiple ways to receive warnings. Ensure access to a safe shelter and review emergency plans. Straight-line winds can cause as much destruction as weaker tornadoes, the NWS reminds.
Those in mobile homes or areas prone to flooding should act swiftly to secure safety. Large hail, up to the size of golf balls, is another concern. Drivers should avoid travel during peak storm hours.
Stay vigilant and stay informed as the storm approaches.
