Portland, OR – A new round of snow will hit the Cascades Passes starting early Sunday morning and continue into Monday. Drivers are urged to prepare for winter weather conditions, with up to 16 inches of snow expected below 5,000 feet. Higher elevations could see more than two feet of accumulation.
The National Weather Service (NWS) in Portland advises that snow will begin around 4 a.m. Sunday, impacting both Oregon and Washington mountain routes. According to NWS, conditions will be particularly treacherous for those traveling through mountain passes.
Officials recommend checking tire conditions, carrying chains, and creating an emergency travel kit. Suggested supplies include extra food, warm clothing, and flashlights. Road conditions may rapidly deteriorate, with low visibility and slick surfaces anticipated throughout the weekend.
Travelers are encouraged to check real-time road updates on Oregon’s TripCheck.com or Washington’s WSDOT.com.
The storm is part of a winter weather pattern bringing heavy snowfall and frigid temperatures to the region. Those planning trips through the area are urged to delay travel or take precautions.
