Huntsville, AL – Residents across the Tennessee Valley are bracing for a stormy night as severe weather is expected to sweep through the region.
The National Weather Service in Huntsville has forecast heavy rainfall, with totals ranging from 2 to 3 inches and localized amounts of up to 6 inches. The storms are expected to hit between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. Sunday, bringing damaging winds, hail, and a risk of tornadoes. Flash flooding could impact low-lying areas and roadways, making travel dangerous overnight. Authorities advise against driving through flooded roads and urge residents to have multiple ways to receive weather alerts.
Tonight’s storms come with an elevated risk due to their timing, which may catch many residents off guard while they are sleeping. Ensure that cellphones remain on and weather radios are set to deliver warnings. Gusty winds and heavy rainfall are likely to cause power outages, so having an emergency kit and supplies ready is strongly recommended.
The system will begin to move out of the region by Sunday morning, with skies gradually clearing by the afternoon. Sunday’s high will reach near 63°F with milder conditions. However, a slight chance of showers could return Monday night, with temperatures falling into the low 40s.
The Tennessee Valley is expected to enjoy a mix of sunshine and clouds heading into New Year’s Eve, offering a reprieve for holiday plans. Highs are forecast to reach the upper 50s on Tuesday and mid-40s on New Year’s Day.
Residents are reminded to stay updated on changing conditions and to remain vigilant throughout the night. Visit weather.gov/hun for the latest updates and warnings.
