Albany, NY – Travelers across the Northeast are being urged to exercise caution as freezing rain continues to create hazardous conditions through Saturday afternoon. A winter weather advisory remains in effect, covering parts of Massachusetts, New York, and Pennsylvania.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), freezing rain is expected to leave a light glaze of ice accumulation across affected areas. Massachusetts could see slick roads and sidewalks in central and western regions, while New York’s Capital Region, Hudson Valley, and Catskills are also at risk. Northern Pennsylvania is bracing for similar conditions, particularly in higher elevations.
Officials warn that black ice is the primary danger, especially on bridges and overpasses where surfaces freeze faster. The advisory is in place until 1 p.m. Saturday, with temperatures expected to gradually rise and reduce ice risks by the afternoon.
Travelers are encouraged to reduce speed, allow extra time for trips, and monitor local weather updates. In Massachusetts, regional highways like I-90 and Route 2 may see slippery stretches. New York’s Thruway and Pennsylvania’s I-81 are also areas of concern. Residents should also prepare for minor power outages due to ice accumulation on power lines.
The NWS advises anyone venturing outdoors to take precautions, particularly on untreated surfaces like driveways and sidewalks. Ground ice may remain even as air temperatures rise.
