WPBN: After suffering a rare bacterial infection that caused him to lose his leg, a nurse in Arizona is becoming accustomed to his new typical routine.
A few months ago, Ed Rivas, who was 49 years old at the time, was on vacation with his family in Florida when he cut his foot on something.
In spite of the fact that he didn’t give it much thought, his foot became swollen and purple when he returned to his house in Arizona.
When he went to a hospital in the area, the doctors informed him that he was suffering from a severe illness that had spread to his bloodstream.
In a matter of days, Rivas was informed by his medical professionals that in order to save his life, they would have to amputate the lower portion of his left leg.
“They did a total of four surgeries, and the first three surgeries were to save the foot and rid it of infection,” Rivas stated. “I was in the hospital for 15 days, but I don’t remember all 15 days.”
It is now Rivas who is in need of aid, despite the fact that he has spent the past sixteen years working as a nurse and providing support to other people.
During this adjustment, he has admitted that it has not been an easy one.
“Everything takes a lot longer,” Rivas stated. “Getting dressed takes longer, going to the bathroom takes longer, getting here and getting there takes longer.”
Due to the fact that Rivas, who is both a husband and a father, is currently unable to work, his family is currently facing a number of financial difficulties.
To assist with the payment of the expenses, a GoFundMe page has been established. Rivas stated that he is resolved to resume his time spent assisting other people.

“I hope to get a prosthetic, and I do plan on going back to work without any restrictions,” Rivas stated. “My goal is to get back to work.”
However, despite the fact that she is facing fresh difficulties, his wife is content to have him by her side.
“He went through so much in such a little time I wasn’t sure he was coming home, honestly,” his wife, Maria Rivas stated.

As of right now, Ed Rivas has not been able to determine what it was that he cut his foot on in Florida in the first place.
MRSA, which stands for methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, was the bacteria that Ed Rivas caught, as stated on the GoFundMe page related to his medical condition.
It is a strain of the staph bacteria that is responsible for infections that are challenging to treat.
It is fortunate that he went to the emergency room at the time that he did because the doctors told him that what he went through is highly uncommon.
