Manteno, IL – Northern Illinois is experiencing a rise in bird flu cases, prompting warnings from local officials to protect pets and residents. Manteno Police Department reported Friday that several dead geese were discovered in the area. Kankakee County Animal Control confirmed the deaths are tied to heightened bird flu activity.
According to the Illinois Department of Public Health, the bird flu virus primarily affects birds but can impact pets and, in rare cases, humans. Officials advise against touching dead birds or allowing pets to interact with them.
Health authorities recommend using disposable gloves or plastic bags for bird disposal and thoroughly washing hands afterward. N95 masks and goggles are also suggested to reduce exposure risk. Residents should keep pets indoors or closely monitored when outside.
While infections in humans and domesticated animals are uncommon, public health officials stress vigilance. Pet owners are encouraged to report dead birds to local animal control agencies and consult veterinarians for advice.
