Metro-East, IL – A mysterious noise jolted residents across the Midwest awake early Thursday morning, shaking homes and sparking widespread confusion in Illinois communities. Reports of the unexplained boom came from areas as far apart as Red Bud, Lebanon, and Edwardsville.
The noise, described as loud and wall-shaking, was reported around 7 a.m., with residents taking to social media to compare experiences. Many described being startled from sleep, while others reported their homes trembling during the unexplained event.
Local and federal officials are investigating the source of the sound. Representatives from Scott Air Force Base confirmed that no military training or aircraft operations occurred at the time. The U.S. Department of Defense and North American Aerospace Defense Command also ruled out any activity involving military aircraft.
While theories of a sonic boom or seismic event circulate, some experts are also considering the possibility of an asteroid explosion in the upper atmosphere. In 2013, a similar incident occurred in Siberia, where an asteroid exploded in the early morning hours, creating a supersonic shockwave that injured over 1,000 residents and shattered windows in the area. The meteorite was later recovered from a pond that had formed in the snow.
While no evidence currently supports this theory, experts emphasize that such events, while rare, are not impossible. Officials are urging residents to remain alert and report any unusual findings to authorities.
