Baltimore, MD – Maryland residents should prepare for wet and potentially hazardous conditions as rain and freezing drizzle move into the area tonight, complicating post-Christmas travel. Overnight temperatures are expected to dip into the upper 30s, leading to icy patches, especially on untreated roads in western areas.
According to the National Weather Service, rain will begin late Friday evening, with freezing drizzle possible in higher elevations, such as Cumberland and Hagerstown. Drivers are urged to use caution, especially on Interstate 70 and other mountainous routes, where slick conditions could persist through early Saturday morning.
Rain will continue through Saturday, with a high near 49 degrees in Baltimore. Winds will remain calm, but new rainfall amounts of up to half an inch are expected. By Sunday, a warmer air mass will push highs into the upper 50s, bringing steady rain throughout the day.
Looking ahead to the New Year’s travel window, milder weather will dominate Monday and Tuesday, with highs in the mid-to-upper 50s. A chance of showers lingers into New Year’s Eve, but no severe weather is forecast.
Residents planning outdoor activities this weekend should monitor local updates and carry umbrellas or rain gear. Travelers heading west or through elevated terrain should check road conditions before departure.
Stay tuned for further updates from the National Weather Service as conditions evolve.
