Judge Slams Mother for Abandoning Newborn ‘Wearing Only a Diaper’ on Christmas Day

WPBN: On Christmas Day, a 42-year-old father and a 33-year-old mother were arrested in Colorado for allegedly leaving their newborn, who was just wearing a diaper, in a car seat on the road’s median.

Authorities said that Jarvis Sims and Christina Thurman were arrested on Wednesday and charged with one count of criminal child abuse each.

Deputies responded to a 911 call at approximately 9:20 a.m. on Christmas Day after someone reported seeing an unattended infant in a car seat that had been left in the median close to 7490 Pecos Street in Denver, Colorado, according to a news release from the Adams County Sheriff’s Office.

The child was described as “sitting in a car seat/carrier” and “wearing only a diaper.” The infant seemed to be “mixed race or Hispanic,” according to the authorities.

According to the sheriff’s office, the 911 caller paused to assist the child before alerting the authorities.

First responders searched the area after arriving at the scene in the hopes of locating surveillance footage that would reveal who had abandoned the infant or who might have been there when the baby was left.

The sheriff’s office also shared pictures of the car seat the infant was discovered in on Facebook. A tiny notice that said, “Display only. Not intended for sale,” was located in the middle of the seat

“We are hoping someone recognizes the car seat or knows something about the baby or family so he can be united with his loved ones and the person who abandoned him can be brought to justice,” according to the release.

The sheriff’s office said in a Facebook page update at 4:45 p.m. Wednesday that they had “been in contact with family members of the infant” and were still looking into the child’s abandonment circumstances. Authorities would “pursue criminal charges if deemed appropriate,” according to the report.

The sheriff’s office released a second update shortly before 9 p.m. on Wednesday, stating that the baby’s biological parents had been located and taken into custody.

“Thank you to our community who quickly sprang into action, spread the word, and assisted with sharing the information about this incident,” according to the release.

“As a precaution,” the infant was taken to Children’s Hospital Colorado.

In an interview, Thurman said that she was “a danger to your son” and that she constituted “both physical and emotional danger” to the boy when she appeared before Adams County Judge Jacque Lyn Russell on Thursday.

According to the allegation, Sims put the infant on the median and left while Thurman and Sims were fighting over her drinking and her home late. Thurman allegedly told police that she contacted her stepfather for a ride rather than going to pick up her son.

At the moment, both suspects are being held on a $50,000 bond. Both of them are scheduled to return to court on Monday.
