Injured North Korean soldier fighting for Russia captured by Ukraine

Injured North Korean soldier fighting for Russia captured by Ukraine

South Korea’s National Intelligence Service (NIS) confirmed on Friday, December 27, 2024, that a North Korean soldier fighting for Russia in the ongoing Ukraine war has been captured by Ukrainian forces. This marks the first official confirmation of a North Korean combatant being taken prisoner during the conflict.

Pyongyang has reportedly deployed thousands of troops to bolster Russian forces, particularly in critical regions like Kursk, where Ukraine launched a surprise border incursion in August.

According to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, nearly 3,000 North Korean soldiers have been killed or wounded in the war so far. South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) corroborated these numbers, estimating over 1,000 casualties among North Korean forces.

Capture details

While details on the capture are scarce, the NIS confirmed it through real-time intelligence sharing with allied agencies. The location where the soldier was captured remains undisclosed.

North Korea’s military objectives

South Korean intelligence suggests that North Korea’s involvement in the conflict may serve dual purposes:

  1. Gaining Combat Experience: Pyongyang aims to modernize its conventional military tactics through direct combat experience in the Russia-Ukraine war.
  2. Strengthening Alliances: North Korea has provided Russia with heavy weaponry, including 240mm rocket launchers and 170mm self-propelled artillery systems, further solidifying their military partnership.

Bilateral relations between Russia and North Korea

North Korean state media reported that Russian President Vladimir Putin recently sent a New Year’s message to Kim Jong Un, emphasizing strengthened bilateral ties following a defense pact ratified earlier this month. Putin described the June 2024 agreement as a “breakthrough document,” marking a significant milestone in their strategic partnership.

As the conflict continues, the involvement of foreign forces like North Korean troops adds a complex layer to the dynamics of the Russia-Ukraine war, raising questions about the global implications of such alliances.
