WPBN: It was stated by the authorities that a guy from Oregon has been indicted for manslaughter in connection with the death of his far more senior companion.
Sherwood is a small community that is a part of the Portland metropolitan region. On December 13, Mary McDowell, who was 64 years old, was discovered dead outside of her home in Sherwood.
As the day progressed, Jose Lucas Morfin Jr., who was 38 years old at the time, was taken into custody and arrested in connection with her death. Late in the previous week, a grand jury from Washington County handed down formal accusations against the defendant.
The defendant is currently facing charges of one crime of manslaughter in the first degree, two counts of assault in the second degree, and one count each of second-degree abuse of a body, unauthorized use of a weapon, and being a felon in possession of a handgun. Additional charges include one count of manslaughter in the first degree.
KGW was informed by the Washington County Sheriff’s Office that the investigation started on the morning of Friday the 13th, when the corpse of McDowell was discovered on Southwest Edy Road.
The body of the woman was discovered on the roadway close to her rural residence at approximately 4:40 in the morning, as stated by the sheriff’s office. The finding was made during the early morning hours, which is a very terrible discovery.
On the other hand, prior to Morfin’s arrest, a spokeswoman for the law enforcement agency stated to the television station that the woman’s death did not appear to be “homicidal or intentional.”
Based on the information, the defendant was initially charged with assault after being held at the scene of the terrible discovery.
At this time, there is a lack of data regarding the case. Morfin, on the other hand, has maintained his stance that he is innocent.
KPTV reported that during his arraignment, he made a request for a public lawyer and addressed a member of McDowell’s family who was probably present in the gallery or otherwise listening to the proceedings. This information was obtained from a courtroom report.
“I know my sister-in-law, Lori Humphry, is listening,” Morfin reportedly stated. “Lori, please don’t listen to the propaganda. Lori, I was there with Mary and I tried to revive her!”
It was claimed that the judge who was handling the case reminded the defendant of his right to remain silent in reaction to what was seen to be an outburst. It has been reported that he did not make use of such right.

“As a family, we are deeply saddened by the circumstances surrounding the death of our beloved Mary Longway McDowell,” according to a copy of the statement. “Mary was a sweet, kind, caring soul with a delightful giggle who spent her entire life serving and caring for others. She cared for many family members at the end of their lives including her sister, her late husband, both of her parents and even other residents at her mother’s memory care facility. She was always available to help friends, neighbors, and strangers.”

Despite the fact that the cause of death of the victim has not been disclosed in its entirety, the prosecution believes that violence was involved.
The charges against Morfin have been met with a not guilty plea. In the present moment, he is being held in custody at the Washington County Jail. According to local law enforcement, the inquiry is still ongoing.
