Lake Charles, LA – A significant weather system is expected to impact southwest Louisiana today, bringing severe thunderstorms and a heightened risk of tornadoes, hail, and flash flooding. Forecasters are urging residents to stay vigilant and prepare for possible rapid weather changes.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Lake Charles, the region faces a Level 2 out of 5 risk for severe weather and excessive rainfall through this evening and into early Friday. Thunderstorms capable of producing large hail, damaging winds exceeding 58 mph, and isolated tornadoes are expected. Flash flooding is also a major concern, with heavy downpours potentially overwhelming low-lying and poorly drained areas.
Travelers and commuters should exercise caution, especially along major roadways such as Interstate 10 and Highway 171, where flooding and hazardous conditions may develop. The NWS advises against driving through flooded areas and recommends keeping weather radios or mobile alerts on hand for timely updates.
Friday’s forecast shows the severe weather threat decreasing slightly, but showers and thunderstorms will linger. The weekend looks calmer, with partly cloudy skies and temperatures ranging from the mid-60s to low 70s. However, residents should remain weather-aware, as additional systems could impact travel during the post-Christmas rush.
