Deadline Approaching: Get Your Pennsylvania Dog License Before It’s Too Late

WPBN: A reminder has been sent out by Agriculture Secretary Russell Redding to all dog owners in the state of Pennsylvania, informing them that it is required for them to obtain a license for their dogs by January 1, 2025.

In addition to ensuring public safety and accountability, the purpose of this legal obligation is to guarantee the health and safety of animals that are kept as pets.

Before the deadline of January 1, 2025, Secretary Redding underlined that all dog owners in Pennsylvania are required to obtain a license for their pets as of the year 2025 through the office of the treasurer of their local county.

“If you love your dog, license your dog,” Redding stated. “It’s simple. The best way to protect your dog is with a license. A license on their collar is clearly visible and increases their chance of being returned home rather than ending up in a shelter.”

It was emphasized once more that obtaining a license for dogs is not only a need under the law, but it is also an essential step in protecting dogs and ensuring their safety.

A piece of legislation that was intended to “modernize” Pennsylvania’s dog regulations was signed into law by Governor Josh Shapiro in October of 2023.

The purpose of these new regulations is to improve the safety of the community by addressing concerns that are associated with stray and dangerous dogs, as well as to make the conditions in which dogs are housed in kennels and shelters safer and healthier for the dogs.

In accordance with the new law, dogs will be required to obtain a license beginning January 1, 2025. This license can be obtained either at the time of adoption or purchase, or by the age of three months if there has been no transfer of ownership.

By making this modification, it will be possible to ensure that all dogs are accounted for and protected by the law from a young age.

According to the information that has been provided, the cost of obtaining a dog license is as follows: an annual license will cost $8.70, and a lifetime license will cost $52.70.

It was also brought to the attention of Secretary Redding that the failure to obtain a license for a dog can result in penalties that are significantly higher than the cost of obtaining the license. Therefore, compliance is a choice that is both responsible and cost-effective for dog owners.

For the sake of convenience, dog owners in Pennsylvania have the option of submitting their applications for dog licenses online through the office of their county treasurer.

In addition, residents of Harrisburg have the opportunity to submit their applications directly through the City of Harrisburg to be considered.

Through this program, the state demonstrates its dedication to the health, safety, and well-being of both pets and the community as a whole, while simultaneously ensuring that dog owners are held accountable for their actions.

Dog owners are strongly encouraged to take prompt action in order to avoid penalties and to contribute to the overall effort to improve public safety and animal welfare.
