Hudson Joseph Meek, a 16-year-old actor best known for his role in the critically acclaimed film Baby Driver, tragically passed away on December 21, just days before Christmas. The Alabama native succumbed to injuries sustained after falling from a moving vehicle in his hometown of Vestavia Hills, a suburb south of Birmingham.
According to local reports, the incident occurred on December 19, and Meek sustained blunt-force injuries. Despite medical efforts, he passed away peacefully, surrounded by family and friends.
“Our hearts are broken to share that Hudson Meek went home to be with Jesus tonight,” wrote his mother, Lani Wells Meek, in an emotional Facebook post. “His 16 years on this earth were far too short, but he accomplished so much and significantly impacted everyone he met.” The Vestavia Hills Police Department is investigating the accident’s circumstances, as reported by NBC affiliate WVTM.
A life full of accomplishments
Though his time was short, Meek’s life was filled with remarkable achievements. Known for portraying Young Baby in Baby Driver, a film nominated for three Academy Awards, Meek also appeared in the hit TV series MacGyver and lent his voice to projects for Toys R Us, McDonald’s, and the video game League of Legends.
His obituary highlighted his passion for acting and the connections he made on set: “He absolutely loved spending time on set and learning the names and stories of every cast and crew member.”
Offscreen, Meek lived a vibrant life as a sophomore at Vestavia Hills High School. He was an active participant in football, the Honor Choir, and student government. His adventurous spirit led him to earn an advanced open-water scuba certification at just 14, and he achieved the rare feat of visiting all 50 U.S. states.
A legacy of kindness and determination
Described as confident, witty, and deeply compassionate, Meek left an indelible mark on everyone he met. “Hudson’s personality was one of a kind,” his family shared. “He was convicted in his beliefs, spontaneous, and quick-witted. He never let the facts get in the way of a funny story and loved friendly banter.”
A celebration of life
A Celebration of Life service is scheduled for Saturday at Dawson Memorial Baptist Church in Homewood, Ala., with a live stream available on his Instagram account and his mother’s Facebook page.
In lieu of flowers, Meek’s family has established the Hudson J. Meek Memorial Scholarship, which will annually award a Vestavia Hills High School student. Hudson is survived by his parents, a brother, grandmothers, and extended family members. His legacy will continue to inspire those whose lives he touched.
