Spokane, WA – Eastern Washington is bracing for a significant winter storm that could severely impact post-Christmas travel, particularly near Stevens Pass and the Cascades. The National Weather Service warns of snowfall rates of up to 1 inch per hour beginning Wednesday night, lasting through Thursday evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Spokane, heavy snow accumulations between 18 and 24 inches are expected in higher elevations, including Stevens and Snoqualmie passes. Mountain road conditions will become treacherous, with low visibility and slick surfaces expected. Drivers are urged to avoid unnecessary travel or prepare for extended delays.

The winter storm will also bring rain and snow to Spokane and surrounding lowlands. The area could see a mix of rain and freezing fog early Thursday morning before transitioning into steady precipitation. Temperatures will hover in the mid-30s to low 40s during the day but will dip to freezing overnight.

Looking ahead, the storm system is expected to ease by Friday, with lingering snow showers in the mountains and rain in lower elevations. Saturday will likely bring more rain to the region, making any planned travel tricky for residents. Those traveling on I-90 should monitor conditions closely and carry winter travel essentials.
