Shreveport, LA – The National Weather Service warns residents to prepare for heavy rain and severe thunderstorms Thursday, bringing risks of flash flooding and travel disruptions. A strong cold front moving into the area could deliver rainfall totals between 1 and 2 inches by late Thursday night.

According to the NWS, scattered showers will develop Christmas Day, with highs near 66 degrees. Rain will persist into Thursday, intensifying in the afternoon as thunderstorms sweep through northwest Louisiana and surrounding regions. Forecasters have issued a Flash Flood Risk and Severe Thunderstorm Risk Level 2 of 5 for the area.

Motorists are advised to avoid water-covered roadways and plan for slow travel, particularly on I-20 and other key routes. With localized flooding possible, the NWS reminds drivers, “Turn around, don’t drown,” when encountering submerged areas.

Thursday’s storms may bring damaging winds, large hail, and the possibility of isolated tornadoes. As colder air pushes through, temperatures will drop into the 50s by evening.

Looking ahead, conditions are expected to improve by Friday morning, with sunny skies and highs in the mid-60s. The weekend forecast includes clear weather, providing relief for post-holiday travelers.

Residents are urged to stay informed by monitoring local forecasts and heeding any updates from emergency officials. Be prepared for potential power outages and ensure vehicles are ready for wet conditions.
