Gaylord, MI – Northern Michigan residents can look forward to a relatively mild Christmas Day with sunny skies and warmer temperatures. However, the National Weather Service warns that rain is expected to move in later this week, potentially impacting travel plans.

According to the US National Weather Service in Gaylord, Tuesday night will see patchy wintry conditions with flurries and freezing rain. Temperatures will drop to 27°F, with calm winds offering minimal relief. By Wednesday, Christmas Day, sunshine will dominate the skies, and temperatures will rise to a high of 36°F. Calm conditions are expected throughout the day, making outdoor festivities more pleasant.

Looking beyond Christmas, Thursday remains partly sunny with highs reaching 38°F. However, rain chances increase significantly by Thursday night, with a 40% chance of showers. Friday and Saturday bring a higher likelihood of steady rain, with highs in the low 40s. Rain will continue into Sunday, with temperatures remaining unseasonably warm for late December.

Travelers and residents are urged to exercise caution on Tuesday night due to patchy freezing rain. If you plan to travel over the weekend, monitor road conditions and allow extra time for delays. Popular routes such as I-75 could be impacted by heavy rain starting Friday evening.
