Pendleton, OR – A high wind warning remains in effect for the foothills of the Northern Blue Mountains through 7 a.m. today, impacting holiday travel along I-84 and nearby routes. Wind gusts reaching 60 mph are expected to make driving hazardous, especially for high-profile vehicles.

According to the National Weather Service in Pendleton, wind speeds of 30 to 40 mph have been recorded overnight, accompanied by occasional heavy rain. The most affected areas include roads near Cabbage Hill and Milton-Freewater. Drivers are urged to reduce speeds, secure loose items, and delay travel where possible. Power outages remain a possibility due to downed trees or power lines.

After the high winds subside, Christmas Eve weather will improve slightly, with temperatures reaching 41°F. Rain is expected to taper off by late afternoon. However, Christmas Day brings more wet conditions, with rain likely after 4 p.m. Snow levels are forecast to drop to 2,700 feet in the afternoon, affecting mountain passes.

The extended forecast shows continued rain through Friday, with daytime highs in the upper 40s and nighttime lows around 38°F. Gusty winds could return midweek, raising further concerns for travel disruptions.

Motorists should monitor updates through weather.gov and plan routes accordingly. Local authorities recommend packing emergency kits with warm clothing and non-perishable food if traveling through remote areas.

Stay vigilant and drive cautiously during these challenging weather conditions.
