Who was Erin West? ‘caring’ teacher, devoted mom killed during Wisconsin school shooting

Authorities have identified the victims of the tragic shooting at Abundant Life Christian School in Madison, Wisconsin, where a student gunman opened fire, leaving two dead and several others injured.

Erin Michelle West, a 42-year-old substitute coordinator, and Rubi Vergara, a 14-year-old freshman, were killed in the attack. The Dane County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed that both victims died from gunshot wounds. The incident, carried out by 15-year-old Natalie “Samantha” Rupnow, ended with the shooter taking her own life.

Tributes to Erin Michelle West

Erin Michelle West, who lived in DeForest, Wisconsin, was known for her compassionate nature and dedication to her students. Angel Brube, a seventh grader present during the shooting, described her as “kind and caring” and an exceptional communicator. Sophomore Mackynzie Wilson, who saw West just hours before the tragedy, said she deeply loved her family and her school community. “She would have done anything for us,” Wilson told reporters, adding that returning to school would be challenging due to the trauma.

The aftermath of shooting and investigation

In addition to the fatalities, five other students and a teacher sustained injuries, with two of the students remaining in critical condition. The Madison Police Department, in collaboration with the Dane County Medical Examiner’s Office, is investigating the shooting. Police Chief Shon Barnes revealed that Rupnow had two handguns but used only one in the attack. “We may never fully understand her motivations,” Barnes said.

Community grieves together

A vigil held on December 17 brought together grieving families, friends, and community members. Charles Moore, a leader at Madison Christian Schools, expressed the ongoing pain: “Lives have been torn apart.” He confirmed that the school will remain closed after the Christmas break to allow time for healing. The Madison Police Department emphasized its commitment to transparency while respecting the privacy of victims and survivors.

This heartbreaking incident has sparked a renewed conversation about school safety and mental health resources, as the community grapples with the loss of a beloved teacher and a young student.
