Elon Musk wants to turn SpaceX Starbase into a new Texas city

Elon Musk’s space company pursues incorporation of rocket launch site

SpaceX has taken a significant step towards establishing a new municipal entity by requesting an election to incorporate Starbase, its rocket launch facility located on the southern tip of Texas near Boca Chica Beach.

In a letter addressed to Cameron County, Starbase’s General Manager Kathryn Lueders said, “To continue growing the workforce necessary to rapidly develop and manufacture Starship, we need the ability to grow Starbase as a community. That is why we are requesting that Cameron County call an election to enable the incorporation of Starbase as the newest city in the Rio Grande Valley.”

While the concept of creating “Starbase, Texas” isn’t new—Elon Musk had proposed the idea in 2021 when he wrote a social media post that said, “Creating the city of Starbase, Texas.”

Official review process

Cameron County official Eddie Treviño Jr. confirmed that the county will carefully review the petition. “Our legal and election administration will review the petition, see whether or not it complied with all of the statutory requirements, and then we’ll go from there,” he explained.

Strategic implications

The proposed city would be situated in a unique location, adjacent to SpaceX’s primary site for building and launching its massive Starship rockets. The incorporation could potentially provide the company with greater autonomy and infrastructure development capabilities.

Local community impact

The petition was submitted by residents of the Starbase area, suggesting some level of local support for the municipal transformation. The move could significantly alter the demographic and economic landscape of the Rio Grande Valley region.

Future outlook

As SpaceX continues to push boundaries in space exploration, this municipal incorporation attempt represents another innovative approach to supporting its ambitious technological goals.

The county’s election and subsequent review will determine whether Starbase becomes the newest city in Texas, potentially setting a precedent for how technology companies might engage with local governance and community development.
