Syria: Reports of people trapped underground at notorious Saydnaya prison, desperate search underway

Urgent rescue mission begins after fall of Assad regime

In a dramatic development following the collapse of President Bashar al-Assad‘s government, the Syrian Civil Defence forces, known as the White Helmets, have launched a critical investigation into the notorious Saydnaya prison’s hidden underground cells.

A complex rescue operation

Five specialized emergency teams have been deployed to investigate and potentially rescue prisoners trapped in the Saydnaya prison’s underground complex, which has long been dubbed the “human slaughterhouse” due to its notorious reputation for human rights abuses. The organization said that the operation can be challenging and may cause delays.

“The White Helmets has deployed 5 specialized emergency teams to Sednaya Prison to investigate hidden underground cells, reportedly holding detainees according to survivors,” wrote The White Helmets on X.

The rescue teams’ composition

The White Helmets have assembled a comprehensive rescue unit including:

  • Search and rescue specialists
  • Wall-breaching experts
  • Iron door-opening crews
  • Trained dog units
  • Medical response teams

Challenges of the rescue mission

The organization has acknowledged the operation’s complexity, with significant obstacles including:

  • Challenging security conditions
  • Severe traffic congestion
  • Complex underground infrastructure
  • Potential electronic security systems

The scale of the potential rescue

According to local authorities, more than 100,000 detainees may be trapped in these underground cells. The Damascus Countryside Governorate has even appealed to former prison workers to provide electronic door access codes to expedite the rescue efforts.

Initial prisoner releases

While the underground rescue continues, significant prisoner releases have already occurred:

  • Thousands of prisoners were seen leaving the prison as rebels broke down doors
  • Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) claims to have freed over 3,500 detainees from the Homs military prison

International context

The rescue operation comes in the wake of the recent rebel takeover of Damascus and the toppling of the Assad regime, marking a potentially transformative moment for Syrian prisoners who have endured years of alleged human rights violations.

Ongoing efforts

The White Helmets continue their mission, with two teams already on-site and additional units expected to arrive gradually. Volunteers are simultaneously exploring alternative methods to access the underground cells, including attempting to breach lower walls.

As the world watches, the race to rescue potentially thousands of trapped prisoners represents a critical humanitarian effort in the wake of Syria’s dramatic political transformation.

The coming hours and days will be crucial in determining the fate of those potentially locked away in the depths of Saydnaya prison.
