British author climbs U.S. bestseller charts after her post about selling only two books goes viral

Local Author’s Viral Moment Transforms Writing Career Overnight

In a heartwarming tale of unexpected internet magic, Vicky Ball, a 48-year-old British author from Colchester, has experienced a remarkable journey from selling just two books at a local event to becoming an international bestselling writer, all thanks to a simple social media post.

At the Galleywood Heritage Centre in Chelmsford, Ball attended an author’s event showcasing her novels, “Powerless” and “Abandoned.” Despite selling only two copies, she shared a candidly optimistic post on X (formerly Twitter) that would soon change her life.

“Sold 2 books,” she wrote, adding a refreshingly positive perspective: “I’ve done some events where I haven’t sold any.”

Viral sensation sparks global interest

What began as a modest acknowledgment quickly transformed into a global phenomenon. Her post rapidly gained traction, accumulating nearly 25 million views and over 745,000 likes. The unexpected attention propelled her books to the top of Amazon’s bestseller charts, with readers worldwide purchasing her novels.

“Feel like I’m in some kind of weird crazy dream right now where lots of people have bought my books,” Ball shared, accompanied by a screenshot of “Abandoned” reaching number one on the American charts.

The author has been overwhelmed by the international response. “I’ve been getting messages on Instagram of people saying: ‘I’m in Colombia and just bought your book’; ‘I’m in Salt Lake City’; ‘I’m in Belgium.’ It’s amazing really—it’s just unbelievable,” she told the Guardian.

The author behind the books

Currently working at the University of Essex while pursuing a master’s degree in creative writing, Ball wrote “Powerless” during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, primarily on weekends while teaching. Her novels offer compelling narratives: “Powerless” is a thriller about a missing girl, while “Abandoned” explores the complex story of an alcoholic mother with a dark secret.

When asked about advice for budding authors, Ball’s response was refreshingly straightforward: “Just write! I just go with it. It’s like a journey, and I enjoy the process. You never know where it’s going to go.”

Ball’s story serves as a powerful reminder that genuine, unfiltered moments can resonate deeply in the digital age. Her viral post demonstrates that success can emerge from the most unexpected places, inspiring writers and creatives worldwide.

As her books continue to climb international bestseller lists, Vicky Ball’s journey from a local book signing to a global literary sensation remains a testament to the unpredictable and supportive nature of social media and the reading community.
