Rock Star Bryan Adams collaborates with chimpanzees for his latest masterpieces

A Symphony of Brushstrokes: Chimps and Rockstar Create Unique Art Collection

In an extraordinary fusion of music, art, and conservation, Grammy-winning musician Bryan Adams has embarked on a remarkable artistic journey that transcends traditional boundaries, collaborating with chimpanzees to create a groundbreaking art collection that raises critical funds for wildlife sanctuary.

The Save the Chimps collection, unveiled during Miami Art Week, features 36 acrylic-on-canvas paintings that represent more than just artistic expression—they symbolize hope and rehabilitation for primates rescued from challenging backgrounds.

Comprising works created by Adams and 15 chimpanzees residing at the 150-acre sanctuary in Fort Pierce, Florida, the collection offers a unique glimpse into interspecies creativity.

The chimpanzees involved in this project have experienced remarkable transformations. Rescued from research laboratories, the exotic pet trade, and the entertainment industry, these primates now find sanctuary in a haven that provides them dignity, care, and, surprisingly, an artistic outlet.

“Only about 10 percent of chimpanzees enjoy painting, and I was delighted to collaborate with the ape artists at Save the Chimps to raise money for the sanctuary… it’s art that gives back,” Adams revealed, highlighting the project’s altruistic core.

Adams’ artistic process is as intriguing as the final product. He prepares canvases with background colors, carefully carving his initials in the corner before shipping them to the sanctuary. The chimpanzees then transform these prepared surfaces into vibrant masterpieces using non-toxic paints, ensuring their safety throughout the creative process.

Dan Mathews, director of Save the Chimps, provides a vivid description of the chimps’ painting techniques. “There are chimps that eat as much paint as they put on the canvas. Some like to put it on like lipstick and kiss the canvas. Some do finger painting. Some use their tongues,” he explains, emphasizing the diverse and unpredictable nature of their artistic approach.

A palette of possibilities

The collection features provocatively named paintings like “Cloud Number 9,” “Midnight Storm,” “Reckless,” and “California Red”—each a testament to Adams’ musical legacy and the chimps’ uninhibited creativity. Priced between $950 and $10,000, these artworks are not just paintings but investments in animal welfare.

Supporting a cause: Beyond the canvas

The sanctuary, home to 223 primates, requires substantial resources. With residents consuming 1,150 bananas daily and maintaining a diverse diet of fresh produce, the annual food costs alone approach $900,000. This art collection represents a critical fundraising initiative to support their ongoing care.

Bryan Adams’ collaboration with chimpanzee artists transcends mere novelty. It represents a powerful narrative of rehabilitation, creativity, and compassion—proving that art can be a transformative tool for raising awareness and supporting those who cannot speak for themselves.

The Save the Chimps collection is more than an art exhibition; it’s a testament to the remarkable potential for connection between humans and our closest animal relatives.
