Virginia man charged with wife’s murder after googling ‘How long does it take to get married after spouse dies’

Virginia man charged with wife's murder after googling 'How long does it take to get married after spouse dies'

A Virginia man has been charged with murder in relation to his wife’s disappearance, as unsettling details surface. Naresh Bhatt, 33, is accused of killing his 28-year-old wife, Mamta Kafle Bhatt, originally from Nepal.

Prosecutors stated that Naresh reportedly searched online for “how soon can you remarry after a spouse’s death” and was seen buying suspicious items shortly after Mamta’s disappearance. The investigation is ongoing, CNN reported.

A trail of suspicious searches

Court records outline a digital trail that prosecutors argue underscores Bhatt’s intent. In April, months before Mamta’s disappearance, Bhatt allegedly searched queries such as, “How long does it take to get married after my spouse dies” and “What happens to debt after a spouse dies.”

Disappearance and investigation

Mamta was last seen on July 29, with her employer reporting her missing a week later, on August 5. A wellness check at the couple’s home swiftly escalated into a homicide investigation.

Prosecutors allege Bhatt’s behavior after Mamta’s disappearance deepened suspicion. Surveillance footage captured him purchasing knives at Walmart—two of which remain unaccounted for—and cleaning supplies the following day.

Forensic evidence speaks volumes

While Bhatt’s defense claims Mamta may still be alive, forensic evidence contradicts this narrative. Investigators confirmed her blood was found in their home, suggesting a violent confrontation that likely ended in her death.

Calculated disposal

Prosecutors say Bhatt attempted to conceal his actions by discarding a bloodstained bath mat and trash bags in a compactor. Surveillance footage of this alleged disposal has become a cornerstone of the case against him.

A Virginia grand jury indicted Bhatt on charges of murder and defiling a body. He was arrested on August 22, following a search of his home, and has remained in custody after being denied bail in September.

Bhatt told investigators the couple was in the process of separating, but the digital and forensic evidence suggests a darker, premeditated motive.

Ongoing investigation

Despite an ongoing search, Mamta’s body has not been recovered. Authorities continue their efforts, driven by evidence and the pursuit of justice for Mamta’s grieving family.
