Large drones and a possible fixed-wing aircraft spark federal probe
The FBI has initiated an investigation into multiple sightings of large drones and a potential fixed-wing aircraft flying over central New Jersey in recent weeks. Officials are urging the public to share information to help identify the source of these aerial vehicles.
Coordinated efforts with local agencies
In a joint statement with the New Jersey State Police and the State Office of Homeland Security and Preparedness, the FBI appealed for public assistance. The agency is seeking details about “recent sightings of possible drones flying in several areas along the Raritan River.”
FBI spokesperson Amy Thoreson told USA Today that witnesses, including both civilians and law enforcement, have reported seeing a cluster of drones over the past several weeks.
Restricted airspace around sensitive locations
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has responded by issuing a temporary flight restriction. Drone operations are now prohibited above Trump National Golf Club and the Picatinny Arsenal military research facility, both located within a 10-mile radius of the Raritan River.
According to the FAA, these restrictions were implemented “at the request of federal security partners.” Despite the concerns, officials have assured residents there is no immediate threat.
Morris County Sheriff James Gannon addressed the public’s unease in a Facebook statement, saying, “The recent drone activity observed by many in our communities is being actively investigated. There is no advisable immediate danger to the public at this time, and the Sheriff’s Office, along with many law enforcement agencies, are working in partnership on this matter.”
Residents capture drone sightings
Residents across North Jersey have documented the mysterious drones, sharing videos and photographs with local authorities. Many describe the sightings as unusual and unsettling.
Jonelle Ferentinos, a local resident, spoke with The Daily Record about her firsthand experience. “It was dark, so I really couldn’t see where they were coming from or going to. They just seemed to be flying about,” she said, recalling a Sunday night encounter with five drones while walking her dog.
She added that the drones returned the following night, with up to four visible at a time, hovering and moving in different directions.
Unanswered questions linger
The FBI is also investigating reports of a fixed-wing aircraft spotted in the same areas, according to The Daily Record. However, no official explanation has been offered for the origin or purpose of the drones or aircraft.
The Raritan River, which spans 70 miles through Somerset and Middlesex counties before emptying into the Atlantic Ocean, remains a focal point of the investigation.
While law enforcement works to uncover the source of the drones, the mystery continues to grip the local community. For now, residents are left with more questions than answers as officials analyze evidence and conduct their probe.
