A Thanksgiving celebration in southern Connecticut turned catastrophic when a turkey fryer ignited a fire in a garage, destroying a $4 million waterside mansion. The fire occurred in Weston, about 65 miles southwest of Hartford, and required extensive firefighting efforts. Authorities reported that the fire started in the garage, spreading rapidly to the rest of the home.
40 people safely evacuated, and no injuries were reported
Approximately 40 people were inside the mansion at the time of the fire, which broke out Thursday afternoon. Everyone managed to evacuate safely, and no injuries were reported, Weston Volunteer Fire Department Chief John Pokorny confirmed. Fire crews responded to the alarm at 3:42 p.m. and found the garage fully engulfed, with flames quickly advancing into the home.
Firefighting efforts are hampered by multiple challenges
Despite aggressive firefighting efforts, crews faced significant hurdles, including structural collapse and a damaged water supply line. “A vehicle drove over the water supply hose on Weston Road, damaging the line, which completely stopped the flow of water for several minutes,” the Weston Volunteer Fire Department said in a statement. Firefighters battled the blaze for more than 16 hours before finally controlling it.
Turkey fryer identified as likely cause
A preliminary investigation by the Weston Fire Marshal’s Office identified the turkey fryer, which had been used inside the garage, as the probable cause of the fire. The incident serves as a stark warning against using fryers indoors.
Mansion declared a total loss
The 9,378-square-foot mansion, featuring 11 bedrooms and 9 bathrooms, was deemed uninhabitable and a total loss, fire officials said. According to Zillow, the property was sold for $4,016,800.
Weston First Selectwoman Samantha Nestor expressed her gratitude to the multiple fire departments and emergency services that responded. “Special thanks to the Weston Public Works, American Red Cross, Salvation Army of Danbury, Aquarion, Eversource, and Soco Gas for their assistance,” Nestor said.
The Georgetown Fire Department shared a post on Facebook reminding the public of the dangers of frying turkeys indoors.
