Bay Area News Group boys athlete of the week

Welcome to the Bay Area News Group (Mercury News & East Bay Times) boys Athlete of the Week poll.

For the entire academic year, we will provide a list of candidates who stood out over the previous week and allow you, the reader, to vote for the winner.

This week, we consider performances from Nov. 11-16.

Polls close at 5 p.m. Wednesday.

Vote as many times as you’d like until then without using bots or any other artificial methods of voting.

Votes by email and after 5 p.m. Wednesday are not counted.

Winners are announced each Friday online and in the print edition of the Mercury News and East Bay Times sports sections.

Candidates for future Athlete of the Week polls can be nominated at [email protected].

We accept nominations until 11 a.m. each Monday.

We also review stats submitted to MaxPreps by coaches/team statisticians.

On to the nominees:

Noah Bandabaila, Oakland football: The senior knocked in a 39-yard field goal to beat Oakland Tech 10-7 and send the Wildcats to the Silver Bowl. Oakland will play McClymonds in the Oakland Section championship at Castlemont on Saturday.

Ryan Chen, Mountain View cross country: The junior took first place in the 2.95-mile Division I race at the CCS championships with a time of 15:16.50. 

Miles Cook, Sacred Heart Cathedral cross country: Cook, a senior, crossed the finish line in 14:52.86 to win the 2.95-mile Division III race at the CCS championships. 

Garett Crabb, Valley Christian water polo: Crabb scored five goals and had four blocks to lead Valley Christian past Leland 13-11 in the CCS Division II title game. The Warriors captured their first-ever boys water polo title and will host Garces Memorial-Bakersfield on Tuesday in the first round of the CIF NorCal playoffs. 

Estevan Duarte, Granada football: The senior totaled over 100 all-purpose yards and two touchdowns in Granada’s 28-14 win over Livermore in the NCS Division IV quarterfinals. Granada (7-4) will travel to American Canyon for its semifinal game on Friday. 

Xander Eschelman, Menlo-Atherton football: The Columbia commit tossed three touchdown passes to lead the Bears to a 35-7 win over Monterey in the CCS Division II quarterfinals. M-A will travel to Wilcox on Friday for its semifinal game. 

Anthony Harrington, Amador Valley football: Harrington caught four touchdowns and totaled 168 yards receiving in Amador Valley’s 42-21 win over Las Lomas in the NCS Division II quarterfinals. The Dons, which improved to 7-4, will host Windsor in the section semifinals on Friday. 

Jessie King, McClymonds football: The freshman scored his first-ever touchdown on a 52-yard punt return as the Warriors defeated Castlemont 36-0. McClymonds will meet Oakland in the Silver Bowl on Saturday. 

Julian McMahan, Monte Vista football: The Washington-bound running back broke the Monte Vista single-game rushing yards record as he totaled 307 yards on 48 carries in the Mustangs’ heartbreaking 31-28 loss to Bishop O’Dowd in overtime. Monte Vista ended its season 5-6.
