Sacred Heart Cathedral hands Bellarmine historic high school football loss

Bellarmine was unable to prevent history from being made at Kezar Stadium in San Francisco on Friday night.

Fellow West Catholic Athletic League member Sacred Heart Cathedral defeated the Bells 35-10 and doomed the storied San Jose program to its first 0-10 season.

Its the culmination of a decade-long slide caused by coaching changes, roster shifts within the league and struggles to adapt.

Bellarmine finished the season with only 67 points scored this season.

Michael Sargent started the scoring for the hosts by running for a five-yard touchdown midway through the first quarter. The Fightin’ Irish quarterback doubled that lead when he threw a 14-yard touchdown pass in the second.

Sargent then made it 28-3 in the third quarter with a pair of touchdown tosses to Obryan Flanigan.

The Bells didn’t go down without a fight, with Dominic Sotelo throwing a 12-yard touchdown to senior Brady Kirk to cut the deficit to 28-10 early in the fourth quarter.

But Sargent quickly erased any hopes of a comeback by connecting with Zion Secrease for a 52-yard TD for the final score of the night.

While Bellarmine’s season is over, Sacred Heart Cathedral – which went 0-10 last year – guaranteed that its season will continue for at least another week.

The Fightin’ Irish (4-6, 2-5) will make the Central Coast Section playoffs as the sixth automatic qualifier from the WCAL, since SHC owns the tiebreaker over Archbishop Mitty.
