California Highway Patrol officers ended a 21-mile pursuit on the 405 Freeway, near Westminster, after authorities said an armed man kidnapped his ex-girlfriend from her workplace in El Monte on Saturday.
Around 6 p.m. on Nov. 2, the woman reported her ex-boyfriend arrived at her place of work on the 10300 block of Lower Azusa Road. The man appeared distraught and was armed with a firearm when he got into an argument with the woman, which escalated when he forced her into her own car and drove away, the El Monte Police Department said in a Sunday statement.
Using the “Find My iPhone” app, the woman’s friend alerted law enforcement and shared the victim’s location. The vehicle was located by a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department helicopter on the 5 Freeway, near the Bandini exit, and the CHP was alerted.
The vehicle was located by CHP officers and the driver refused to stop, leading multiple officers on a 21-mile pursuit that ended when spiked strips were used to puncture the vehicle’s tires.
After a slow-speed pursuit, the car driver yielded near the 405 Freeway and Westminster Avenue around 8:33 p.m., police said.
Cars behind the pursuit had been held back by police. A massive traffic jam on the southbound 405 Freeway started to clear after the suspect surrendered.
The woman was safely recovered without injury. The suspect was taken into custody on suspicion of kidnapping and felony evading.
