Dolphins bound about amid bioluminescence off California coast – The Mercury News

Representatives of UC San Diego’s Scripps Institution of Oceanography in La Jolla went cruising with dolphins in the early morning of Oct. 17 and captured video of them gliding through bioluminescent waters near Scripps Pier.

UCSD photographer Erik Jepsen shot the footage while Scripps Oceanography diving locker supervisor Rich Walsh drove their boat.

According to SIO scientists, bioluminescent “red tides” off San Diego are typically formed by large groups of the dinoflagellate Lingulodinium polyedra, a species of phytoplankton known for producing a shimmering neon blue glow visible at night when they are agitated by waves or other movement in the water. ♦
